CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild
Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is
to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does
not threaten their survival.
How does CITES applies to tone wood trade?
The CITES agreement applies to certain tone wood we sell as all the Dalbergia
species for instance. Most of the protected wood are in the CITES appendix II,
these wood can be sold within European Union without CITES permit. The permit
applies to exports outside the European Union and has a cost of 90 euro. The
only wood specie in the Appendix I is Dalbergia nigra known as Brazilian
rosewood, for Dalbergia nigra CITES permit is required in any case. The CITES permit takes approximately 2 weeks to be issued by the Portuguese
authorities ICNF – Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas and it is not possible to cancel an order if the CITES certificate has already been requested.
On orders that needs CITES permit the shipping will be delayed until the permit is
issued in your name and good for export. It is important to know that CITES permit applies to one transaction
independently of the quantity of the wood, for example if you buy one set of
back and sides or more of a protected tone wood, there is only one permit
needed.
Check with the authorities in your own country about a possible need for a separate CITES import permit ( in some nations it is needed) .
