A deciduous tree which reaches 45 m in height, forms an open canopy. The trunk is straight, the bark brown or almost black and very wrinkled. The concentrated extract of its bark is used as a dewormer in biological medicine. Its leaves, green and yellow, contain an aromatic oil and the flowers are catkins. The fruit is drupaceous, best known for the nuts. The wood, with high resistance to wood decay agents, is considered a most durable wood and in favorable conditions will not decay. High wood quality, highly valued, dense, hard and strong.

CITES status is unrestricted. On the IUCN Red List reported as Least Concern.
